Training a Boxer Puppy
What You Need to Know About the Boxer Breed
The Boxer originated in Germany during the latter part of the 19th century. This breed apparently received the name Boxer because of the boxing-like movements the dogs made with their front paws.
The Boxer’s Characteristics
- Boxers are very strong
- Because of their intelligence and strength, Boxers are often used in areas such as police work, search and rescue and guard-dog type work.
- Boxers have excellent hearing.

- Boxers need lots of attention and wouldn’t respond well to being left home alone day after day.
- Boxers have loads of energy and can be quite boisterous
- Boxers are usually both loyal and protective.
Boxer Puppy Training Simplified
- Because Boxers are so strong with powerful jaws, you need to start your training as soon as puppy arrives home. He needs to learn how to be gentle even when he is playing.
- Train your Boxer puppy from an early age not to jump up .
- Avoid the temptation to have your Boxer puppy jump up onto your lap and avoid bending down to pat him every time he does jump up.
- If he tries to jump up on you, give a consistent verbal command and then turn away, denying him the attention that he is seeking.
- Early socializing can also help to prevent your dog from constantly jumping up. If he learns to share time with other puppies at puppy school as well as with other members of your family, he will be less likely to be jealous and less in need of jumping to get your undivided attention.

- Avoid the temptation to have your Boxer puppy jump up onto your lap and avoid bending down to pat him every time he does jump up.
- This breed needs to know that you are the “top dog” otherwise he can quite literally walk all over you. You can be friendly while still remaining firm so that he learns to respect what you ask of him.
- Even though the Boxer has a short coat, this is still a breed that sheds hair. So it would be good to introduce some gentle brushing early on so that your Boxer puppy gets used to grooming early on.
