It is best to prepare ahead of time for how you are going to go about your Golden Retriever puppy training.
Golden Retriever Information
- Golden retrievers are usually quiet by nature, a sheer joy to have around.
- Golden retriever puppies will often make cute little growling noises when they play, almost as if they are trying to talk to you.
- Golden retrievers are not really known for their barking, something to be very pleased about. However, it is good to keep this in mind when playing with your puppy so that he doesn’t learn to bark by imitating puppy growling, yapping noises that we all are often tempted to make when first entertaining our new addition to the family.
- They are usually happy for you to be the “leader of the pack”, a characteristic that makes it easier when it comes to training Retriever puppies.

Tips that help with Golden Retriever Puppy Training

- No-Growling Training
Start your Golden Retriever puppy training in short doses right from the beginning. Train puppy to recognize that you are in charge by doing simply acts like removing his favorite toy briefly or handling his food bowl while he is eating, also briefly, but just so that he learns not to be possessive or snarl when someone takes something away from him. - Short Training Sessions
Golden retriever puppies will tend to be bigger than many other lap-type breeds but just keep in mind that he is still a “baby” so give the training sessions in small doses. Reward him frequently to keep his attention. If he looks like becoming distracted it’s probably time to let him have a little play and take a nap. - Control Chewing
Golden Retrievers love to chew so you will need a good supply of allowable chewing toys, ones that you don’t mind being torn and pulled apart. Of course you can recycle parts of some of puppy’s old toys. For example, you can rescue the squeaky part of a chewed up toy and recycle it by stuffing a sock with padding and then positioning the squeaky component inside the stuffing. This makes a very effective, but cheap chew toy and you won’t mind how many of these he goes through. - Restrict Digging
Golden Retrievers, like most dogs, also love to dig. The best way to handle this is to set aside a spot in the yard that you designate as the “okay to dig” spot. This is almost like giving puppy his own sand pit to romp around in and dig to his heart’s content. You can put a collection of favorite toys in this spot and rotate them so that he always has something that he enjoys doing in that corner. Any time, he attempts to dig in your favourite garden bed, firmly say “no” and then take him to the corner of the yard where he is allowed to dig. - House Training Puppy
Potty training your golden retriever is one lesson you want to introduce as soon as puppy comes home.
